Sony to announce new alpha mirrorless camera on Jan 26th, 2021

Wait, another Sony alpha camera to be announced next week?

Sony just teased a new alpha mirrorless camera announcement for next Tuesday – January 26th, 2021!

An teaser image with the tagline “The One Never Seen” appeared earlier today on the Sony Alpha Universe Twitter feed. Nevertheless, as cryptic as it sounds, these four words may just give us a big clue as to the main event feature of the new “secret” Sony camera.

It’s not easy to keep a top-secret/hush-hush camera under wraps these days, so we fully expect some credible leaks to appear in the next few days before the reveal next week.

New Sony Camera Announcement – Tuesday, 26th January 2021 – 10:00 AM New York/ 7:00 AM Los Angeles

And of course, the question on everyone’s mind right now is – is it a new Sony a9 III or a new model that sits somewhere between the flagship a9 II and the Sony a7S III/A7R IV line-up?

Who is it for and will it have 8K video? Is it a full-frame, high-megapixel hybrid that builds on the crazy-good 4K video specs of the Sony a7sIII?

But wait, why would Sony announce the “unicorn” a9 Mark III, when the current model Sony a9 II (announced in October 2019) is not even a year and a half old yet? Surely, Sony wouldn’t want to obsolete their flagship full-frame camera this quick.. or so we thought?…

Is Sony coming out with a Canon EOS R5 competitor camera?

2020 was quite unpredictable, to say the least, and if the first couple of weeks of 2021 are an indication of what’s to come, then we’re in for quite the trip.

In the tech world, and especially the mirrorless camera sub-segment, product life cycles have shrunk from around three to four years to just under two in the last couple of years. So, if they do announce the Sony a9 III next week, I won’t be too surprised.

But wait, you say – what about the Sony a7sIII? Surely that was an exception, as it took Sony nearly six years to release a successor. Well, yeah, but it’s not like they didn’t give us a fantastic “in-between” model – the mighty a7 III, which excelled at both video and stills without requiring enthusiasts to take out a 2nd mortgage.

My take on the new Sony alpha camera

I have no prior knowledge of what’s coming out next Tuesday, but I will take a guess of what we may see next week from Sony. I am basing my prediction (take it with a huge grain of salt please) on widely available rumors and my own analysis of Canon – Sony’s main competitor in the mirrorless camera world:

  • a brand new flagship full-frame model to sit alongside a9 II
  • 50+ megapixel FF sensor (not the same as the a7RIV)
  • Not as fast as the a9 II (but porting the a7s III AF system)
  • 8K/30p video without overheating!
  • to be have some sort of dedicated wireless video transmission technology making it compatible with the upcoming Sony Airpeak drone
  • latest 10bit 422 codecs from the a7sIII (and the same menu system)
  • 4K/60p, but no 4K/120fps
  • basically a more video oriented, high megapixel a9 II

“The one never seen” – I read it as 8k video capture from a drone! Birds eye view in stunning detail. But then again, I could be totally wrong. Either way we’ll all find out next Tuesday.
