Originally announced back at IBC 2019, the new Sony 16-35mm cine zoom is due to ship in December at $5,499. And even though Sony is not yet officially bundling the lens with the Sony FX6, and despite it costing as much as the camera, it will surely be an impressive and very suitable lens for both the FX9 and FX6, as well as other full-frame Sony cameras including the top-end Sony VENICE.

Furthermore, the lens supports intelligent shooting functions such as fast and accurate AF while also offering manual focus. The FE C 16-35mm T3.1 is only available in Sony E-mount and has been designed for full-frame sensors. So, in practice, any full-frame E-mount camera can take advantage of this lens including Sony a7sIII users.

The lens has an assignable button on the left side and users can push/pull the focus ring to flip between AF and MF.

Advanced Optical Formula with XA Elements

The new Sony cine zoom delivers excellent bokeh and corner-to-corner resolution thanks to two XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements with extreme surface precision of 0.01-micron. Additionally, the lens has a circular 11-blade aperture for round and pleasing out-of-focus background.

Furthermore, the FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G has 3 aspheric lenses that are positioned in a way that effectively reduces field curvature, astigmatism and, in combination with two Extra-low Dispersion glass elements, reduces color distortion.

Additionally, the floating focus mechanism provides outstanding resolution at every zoom position. The new lens also features Nano AR (Anti Reflection) coating, to reduce flare.

Accurate Manual Focus and Fast AF

For those planning to use the lens in manual focus mode, you’d be please to find out the lens has a 140-degree angle of rotation for fine control. In addition, Sony has included clear distance scale markers for more consistent focus pulls. Moreover, the Linear Response manual focus enables smooth manual focus, allowing users to adjust focus accurately and intuitively.

The Sony FE C 16-35mm has three independent rings for focus, iris and zoom making it possible to use FIZ motors and use it in more cine-oriented productions. Each ring features the standard 0.8mm pitch gear for use of follow focus accessories. The lens has a 114mm diameter for more compatibility with industry standard matte box accessories.

Detachable Servo Zoom Unit

Another unique feature of this lens is the two-speed servo unit, which provides smooth, accurate zoom control, which can be activated from a switch on the lens or a lever on the Sony FX6 Smart Grip.

In addition, the servo is detachable, which is a nice touch for situations when you want to reduce weight or use the lens with follow focus systems.
