Sony has just announced their latest addition to their growing range of native mirrorless full-frame lenses – the Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G.

The new SEL20F18G lens is said to be “perfect for a variety of creative needs… portraits, astrophotography, landscape and street photography, as well as capturing impressive video.”

The new Sony lens features exceptional G Lens resolution and bokeh as well as a compact and lightweight durable construction.

Designed for Full-Frame Sensors

The new 20mm f1.8 G ultra-wide prime lens has been designed for full-frame sensors such as the one in the venerable a7III, a9 II, and the upcoming Sony a7s III, but of course, can be perfectly useful on a APS-C/S35 sensor such as on the FS7 and a6400/a6500 lineup.

The new FE G 20mm f18 also just happens to be the widest full-frame prime lens in Sony’s E-mount lineup, giving users a wider tool with which to creatively enhance their work wither it be landscape photography, street photography, astro-photography, or videography/vlogging type scenarios.

Advanced Aspherical Elements and Low ED Glass

The new Sony FE 20mm f1.8 G Series lens design features 2x advanced aspherical (AA) elements and 3x extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements designed to suppress CA (chromatic aberration) while delivering high corner-to-corner image sharpness and overall quality with minimal distortion, even when wide open at the maximum f1.8 aperture.

The lens features excellent close-up performance, with a MOD of 7.5 inches (max. magnification: 0.2 times). Also, it delivers beautifully de-focused backgrounds, or bokeh.

The advanced optical formula utilised in the lens design helps photographers especially in night scenes or starry skies. The new 20mm f1.8 G can render them easily in crisp and clear images. Such that accurately reproduces point light sources with high contrast and minimum sagittal flare.

“We’re driven by the needs of our customers and will continue developing the best tools to meet their creative ambitions.” said Neal Manowitz, deputy president of Imaging Products and Solutions Americas, Sony Electronics.

“Our 56th E-mount lens, the new FE 20mm F1.8 G, is fast, lightweight and extremely versatile…”

Compact, Lightweight Design

Despite its wide-angle aesthetic, this 20mm lens features a compact design and weighs just over 370grams (or about 13.2 oz). In addition, its small size and lightweight foot-print make it truly mobile when used with alpha cameras.

Furthermore, the two extreme dynamic (XD) Linear Motors deliver fast, precise and quiet autofocus for both stills and video shooting.

Sony engineers designed this lens to be dust and moisture resistant; it also features a fluorine front element coating. Thus making the FE 20mm F1.8 G highly reliable and easy to operate.

It also features a customizable focus-hold button and aperture ring with a click on/off switch and is compatible with a variety of 67mm filters for extra creative control.

Pricing and Availability

The FE 20mm F1.8 G is scheduled for delivery in March 2020. It will launch at $899 in the US, £950 UK inc. VAT, and $1,199 CAD in Canada.

You can pre-order the Sony FE 20mm f1.8 G series prime at B&H.
