Sony has just released firmware v2.0 for the a7s III, which adds the popular S-Cinetone picture profile for quick turnaround projects.
In addition, the S-Cinetone picture profile (located in PP11 in camera) was “inspired by the color science used in Sony’s flagship VENICE cinema camera.”
And with this addition the alpha7s III becomes “identical” to the new Sony FX3, which has a beefier body, active cooling and an XLR top handle. However, when it comes to the internals, recording options and now picture profiles – the a7s III and FX3 are the same camera.
What is S-Cinetone, and why would I want to use it?
While it doesn’t have the DR of Slog3, PP11 (a.k.a S-Cinetone) is a popular choice among one-man-band creators and those looking to get great colours straight out-of-camera since it requires little to no grading in post.
Furthermore, S-Cinetone is said to produce natural mid-tones, plus soft colors and gorgeous highlights that are essential to create a cinematic look.
Additionally, firmware update v2.0 also enables Sony a7sIII users to use SteadyShot (IBIS) with Active Mode in S&Q mode in frame rates below 100/120fps.
