SmallHD has just launched the new Focus Pro rugged monitors for the RED Komodo and many other cameras. The original SmallHD Focus monitor was the company’s most affordable monitor, and naturally over time as the company evolved, their monitors did as well.
The new SmallHD Focus Pro monitor lineup is now beefier to compliment the rugged nature of RED cameras. There are 2 versions in the lineup at the moment – the Focus Pro and Focus Pro OLED.
SmallHD 5-inch Focus PRO and Focus PRO OLED
Moreover, both models share the same 5-inch display size. However, the OLED has a better screen rated at 5.5-inches diagonally, and a 1080p display. For comparison purposes, the IPS LCD on the Focus Pro is 1280 x 720.
In addition, Both monitors feature an SDI input and can be powered from the camera via 2-pin connector or via a dedicated Sony L-series battery. Having a robust input connection such as BNC (SDI) is great because you can basically use any other SDI compatible camera.
Rugged, Compact Monitors with RED Camera Control
In 2020, we are seeing the release of some truly exciting cameras such as the RED Komodo, a compact, rugged cinema camera with REDCODE RAW. Naturally, the shape of the camera dictates that the operator(s) add an external monitor or viewfinder.
However, the boxy design of the Komodo keep with the tradition of DSMC2 cameras and is best paired with a monitor for general filming scenarios.
Furthermore, SmallHD is also offering Focus Pro Kits with DSMC2 Camera Control. Similar to the Cine 7 smart monitor, these kits will allow operators to control the camera parameters via the monitor’s touchscreen.
Camera Control for RED KOMODO
In addition, come September, RED Komodo users will have access to menu settings camera control from the Focus Pro touchscreen. According to Small HD, this functionality will be available as a paid upgrade license sometime in September 2020.
At launch, Focus Pro will arrive with Camera Control for DSMC2 (for Focus Pro DSMC2 Kits only), as well as a new and improved SmallHD OS4 software. Improvements include a better user interface, new Page Tools, and increased responsiveness.
In addition, SmallHD have developed their own Komodo hinge mount that allows for seamless 180 degrees tilt priced at $99 USD.
Improved physical design elements for the Focus Pro lineup:
- A rugged aluminium chassis in lieu of the typical plastic unibody
- 5-pin Lemo Connector for USB Camera Control
- A more robust 2-pin Battery Holster
- Total weight of just over .5lbs
