The upcoming RED Komodo 6K gets tested in some extreme winter conditions thanks to RED’s Matt Tremblay.

As per the usual RED marketing strategy, we got a few images from posted on Matt’s Instagram. These images show him filming with the camera in what appears to be some insanely cold and windy white-out conditions at an elevation of 10,000+ feet.

RED Komodo is Blizzard Tested!

The RED Komodo is said to be launched officially sometime in the next few months (some suggest a possible March or April release).

And from the images and info officially released from RED so far, we know that the Komodo will be the most compact RED camera to date. Komodo is said to be equipped with a S35-ish sensor capable of shooting in resolutions up to 6K.

From the latest Komodo pics above and below, we can identify a SmallHD monitor of sorts, possible the OLED variant with SDI input.

Also note that the RED Komodo features a 4K SDI output on the back. Moreover, we can identify a couple of Global Dynamics United (GDU) Cowboy Handgrips.

Additionally, the lens in these images appears to be a mechanical manual focus lens of sorts. Quite possibly a Leica-M or Zeiss manual lens.

Matt Tremblay of RED, who was testing the Komodo, said this on his Instagram:

6K harsh environment test… Passed with flying colors. Elevation: +10k ft, Temperature: 5-10 Degrees Fahrenheit, 70 mph wind gusts. Blizzard-whiteout conditions. Sustained usage with intermittent recording for 1.5 hours. Wet/Freezing media and cable swapping. Powered by a tethered V-Lock battery with a 6ft cable run through the sleeve of my 1987 PRE-GORE-TEX jacket…

Also, from recent posts on by RED CEO Jarred Land we know that the RED Komodo 6K is currently undergoing testing. And, of course, we hope for an official launch sometime in late Spring.
