It has been a busy week over at RED as the company is slowly getting back to business after restrictions for businesses were lifted in California. Also, we got a few important updates from the company’s CEO Instagram profile. And as far as a RED Komodo price – expect to pay around $6K for the normal black version and $7,000 for the special edition Stormtrooper white versions. The latter will precede the normal version in terms of timing, as was the case with previous RED cameras.
These cameras will be some of the first Komodo’s to be made. But keep in mind that in the midst of the whole Covid19 craziness, RED just like most other manufacturers in the US are working with very limited capacity until full scale operations are back in effect.
In addition, RED released some new footage shot on the Komodo, which you can check out a bit further down below.
RED Komodo Special Color Editions (Pre-Release)
We all know, RED isn’t your typical camera company. And now they will even be offering some very limited quantities of early-pre-release RED Komodo cameras before the Stormtrooper white versions.
They will have different colors, which according to Jarred will be random – so you don’t get to pick what color you want. Instead, whatever color they make – you get it.
The pre-release, pre-Stormtrooper Komodo’s are likely to ship to a very select few next week or first week of June. In order to get them, you’ll have to email Jarred, but given that some many of his Instagram and Facebook followers have already done so, you’ve probably missed the boat.
Jarred Land via Instagram:
New step in the the process? 15 minutes in the magical UV Bubble just for good measure. Now that our factory is back in action …albeit severely anemic with the new protocols, we can slowly start making Komodos again. it’s a really, really slow train now so it’s gonna take a while to get enough of our troops back to start making enough volume to blast out to dealers and the world but the good news is to pass that time and keep our skeleton crew busy, in 2 weeks I’m gonna start selling some crazy colored Komodos to my friends and anyone else who wants to be a little “different” . Super limited low quantities. Will make just a handful per week till the stormtroopers are ready . Email me if your interested.
RED Covid-19 Update:
As of a week ago, RED is re-opening back for business with minimal staff at HQ and taking every precautionary and safety measures as per official government guidance in the state of California.
Starting today, RED will begin to safely reopen our business by processing orders on RED.com and shipping. RED is continuing to take measures to prioritize the safety of our employees, customers, and partners by operating with minimal staff at HQ and will remain diligent and thoughtful in following the guidance set forth by the state of California. Thank you for your patience and understanding during these times.
RED Komodo Latest New Footage
The latest RED Komodo footage popped up on the RED CEO’s Instagram profile, which you can see below. Unfortunately, there is still no high resolution footage available with download-able r3d files.

RED Komodo 6K Price and Availability
As of now (week of 21 May, 2020) RED Komodo pricing is as follows:
- Pre-release (random) RED Komodo Colour Version (Super-Limited Edition) – $7,000+ USD
- RED Komodo Stormtrooper White (Limited Edition) – $7,000
- RED Komodo (Black, regular edition) – $6,000
- a further $1,000 discount for RED Hydrogen owners for $5K end price.
However, despite these new updates, which are all good news for us all – we still don’t have full confirmed specs and a release date. The latter is understandable given the current global economic disruption. I hope supply chain issues don’t creep up, but these days nothing is certain.
Nevertheless, Jarred has reassured the RED community they are on the ball and despite the lock-down, their manufacturing partners are confident they can crank out Komodos in large quantities once full scale operations resume.
However, despite production ramp up in the upcoming few months, I personally would not expect the Komodo shipping worldwide in significant quantities by the end of the Summer… I don’t want to be a downer, just keep a realistic outlook.
I am really looking forward to the official launch and release of the RED Komodo, as this will be the dream camera for many filmmakers and creatives.
