RED Komodo Autofocus works like a charm! It is still a work-in-progress, but so far, so good. We’re excited to see how far they can take it!
Jarred Land, CEO of RED Digital Cinema, just posted a teaser demo of the upcoming RED Komodo autofocus performance. Of course, it’s in an early stage of development, but this demo proves it has a lot of potential.
In a short video posted on his Facebook profile, we can see the RED Komodo autofocus rack focusing smoothly between two subjects.
Jarred also added:
Another weekend in lockdown and another awesome new weekend Komodo firmware build. PDAF autofocus is coming along nicely… We still have miles and miles to go to make this new AF perfect but the RED engineers definitely are at the top of their game right now. #komodo
The Most Compact RED Camera
The RED Komodo will be an exciting options for many filmmakers. As it will offer a very compact size and incredible RED image quality. Of course, internal RAW is a massive advantage.
Not to mention a Phase-Detect Autofocus function with Canon RF lenses and adapted EF glass, which many people own boatloads of.
In the screenshot above, you can see the Komodo menu interface and top screen. I think the interface is very intuitive and dare I say even better than the current one on DSMC2 cameras? You be the judge, but I prefer these.
However, the screenshot above shows the Komodo recording in 6K 17:9 in R3D MQ – is this a new Redcode RAW flavour?
I think, it’s possible we may see a new flavour of compressed raw recording in the Komodo, which has not been talked about yet. Exciting times ahead, indeed!
RED also recently released the some new Komodo footage, you can see it here.
