Panasonic has announced a new Lumix S 50mm f1.8 full-frame prime lens for L-mount cameras such as the LUMIX S5, S1, S1R, and S1H.

The newest large-aperture standard fixed focal length lens in the L-mount Lumix range is significantly more affordable than the already available Lumix S PRO 50mm f1.4.  In addition, the new S 50mm f1.8 is the second addition to the series of four f/1.8 large-aperture lenses based on the L-Mount system standard.

Furthermore, all four f1.8 lenses from the LUMIX S Series share a common size and position of control parts which, for example, make it easy to exchange lenses quickly when the camera is on a gimbal with minimum adjustment of connected gears.

67mm Front Filter Thread

Moreover, by keeping the diameter consistent, the same filters can be used across this set of lenses. The filter diameter of the new S 50mm f1.8 is 67 mm. This is a common and affordable size for both ND and Polarizer filters.

In addition, the new lens sports a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm and an overall optical design comprised of 9 optical elements arranged in 8 groups. These include three aspherical lenses, one ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lens and one UHR (Ultra-High Refractive Index) lens.

9 Blade Circular Aperture Design

These aspherical lenses achieve high descriptive performance and beautiful bokeh across all f1.8 lenses in the series. These lenses are suitable for a wide range of photography styles including portraiture and landscape. Notably, the ED lens effectively suppresses chromatic aberration.

Of course, this lens will excel not only in stills mode, but also in video mode. The new LUMIX S 50mm f/1.8 boasts some serious performance with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, previously a fatal problem of all interchangeable lenses designed for still image photography.

This advantage, together with a micro-step aperture control for smooth exposure change produces professional quality video.
