Venus Optics has just announced a new Laowa 50mm f2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. In addition, the being specially designed for the Micro Four Thirds system, the new Laowa 50mm f2.8 also happens to be the first ever 2X (2:1 magnification) macro lens designed for MFT cameras.
Another interesting fact about this new lens, is the inclusion of an apochromatic (APO) design designed to eliminate chromatic aberrations across the frame.
Furthermore, the new 50mm f2.8 2X Ultra Macro from Laowa is priced at $399 USD and is available now.
2X Macro and Lightweight Design
Unlike most macro lenses for Micro Four Thirds cameras, which can only focus up to 1X, the new Laowa 50mm macro lens offers a 2x magnification ratio along with a minimum focusing distance of 5.3” (13.5cm).
This makes it the first lens with a greater-than-life-size (2:1) maximum magnification for the Micro Four Thirds camera system, allowing photographers to capture stunning details.
In addition, the lens sports a compact design measuring at just 3.1-inches (79mm) long and weighs only 8.4oz (240g). Also, the lens has an internal focus design ensuring the length of the lens remains unchanged during focusing.
Apochromatic Optical Design
Furthermore, the APO optical design from the ‘sister’ Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro, has been ported over to the 50mm lens. This contributes to a significant reduction in chromatic aberration and colour fringing.
Moreover, the optical design comprises of 14 elements arranged in 10 groups. Three of which are extra-low dispersion to minimize CA across the frame.

The lens is also available from authorised dealers worldwide.
