Deity D4 DUO is a Unique On-Camera Mic for DSLRs and Mirrorless

Is there anything that this mic can’t do?

The new Deity D4 DUO is a new, super-compact, on-camera mic that has some unique features! A new addition by budget audio maker Deity Microphones, the D4 DUO mic features a 3.5mm input and can capture audio from both sides!

Designed for DSLR and mirrorless users in mind, in addition to vloggers using compact and even action cameras, the D4 DUO mic packs quite a few awesome features.

Dual-Capsule Design – Capture Audio From Both Sides

Its dual cardioid capsule design allows users to capture audio from both side of the camera. And this is particularly useful when you are filming a subject but you also want to add your audio or the interviewer audio without adding a 2nd mic.

And it weighs only 40 grams, making it super-lightweight and easy to just set-and-forget on top of your DSLR or mirrorless camera. So, whether you are lusting over the upcoming 8K Canon EOS R5 or the ProRes RAW-ready Panasonic S1H, the D4 DUO can add some serious audio punch to your kit!

3.5mm Input and Mono/Stere Switch

Another awesome new feature on the D4 DUO mic is the 3.5mm AUX input. This is quite uncommon for a small on-camera mic. However, it does add to the versatility of the D4 DUO microphone. You can plug in a wireless receiver or a lavalier mic directly into the mic eliminating the need for extra splitter cables or breakout boxes.

In addition, the D4 DUO has a mono/stereo switch on top, which allows users to use it as a traditional unidirectional mic, recording a mono signal to both Left and Right channels.

Connect a Lav mic or Wireless RX

However, it is worth to note that when you connect a lavalier or wireless receiver to the 3.5mm input you won’t get audio from the back capsule. This makes sense, as you can’t record audio from three sources with this mic.

From what I understand from the launch video the audio split is as follows:

  • With a Lav Mic/Wireless RX (works only in Stereo/Dual Mode):
    • Front Mic – audio recorded on LEFT channel
    • Lav/Wireless RX – audio recorded on RIGHT channel
    • Rear Mic – disabled

Of course, when you are not using an external lavalier or wireless receiver, and you switch the mic Stereo (Dual) mode you get the following:

  • Front Mic audio – on LEFT channel
  • Rear Mic audio – on RIGHT channel
