Is a new Canon EOS R6 camera in the works?
While Canon has been teasing the upcoming release of their Canon 5D Mark IV equivalent in a mirrorless form-factor – upper-tier Canon EOS R5, which the legendary camera maker is gearing up as the first 8K video capable mirrorless camera, new leaked specs of a mid-tier Canon full-frame mirrorless are circulating the web.
The rumoured mid-tier full-frame camera is supposedly going to sit below the R5, but above the EOS R and RP in the Canon full-frame mirrorless hierarchy.
4K/60p and IBIS
According to CanonWatch, the R6 will feature 4K60p video recording and in-body-image-stabilization. However, I won’t get too excited if it’s of the “electronic” variant, and not an optical/physical stabilization of the sensor assembly like in Sony a7III or A9, A7R IV. But we can’t know for sure until the camera is announced officially. The upcoming mid-tier camera is also reported to sacrifice some weather-sealing and EVF quality.
Canon EOS R6 Leaked (possible) Specs:
- 20 Megapixel Full-Frame CMOS sensor
- 4K/60p video
- 1080p/120fps slow-motion
- In-Body Image Stabilization
- 12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic.
- Dual card slots
- No top-down screen
- Lower resolution EVF than the R5
- Build quality not as good as the R5
- New battery
- June 2020 launch (May announcement possible)
With specs like these, the Canon EOS R6 can easily be a winner among video creators and photographers, but they have to get the price right. Canon started off a bit wobbly in the full-frame mirrorless game with the somewhat underwhelming EOS R and RP, but the R5 and R6 are already looking like winners.
When Will It Be Announced?
Just for those out of the loop, both the R5 is R6 are likely to be announced in the next couple of months.
However, due to the cancellation of Photokina 2020, we do not know the exact dates. Chances are, Canon will likely chose a date around late May. We will keep you updated as to when that happens.
